Permutation bet guide
How permutation bets work
Understand how selections generate separate betting lines, how stakes reach those lines, and why the complete ticket deserves line-by-line inspection.
A permutation is a collection of separate bets
A permutation turns a larger list of selections into separate constituent betting lines. The displayed ticket total is therefore made from individual bets, not one indivisible result. Every line has its own selections, allocated stake, combined price and supplied outcome.
One losing selection affects every line containing it. Lines that do not contain that selection still have their own result, which is why an aggregate ticket total cannot explain the complete calculation.
What is a fold?
A single contains one selection. A double contains two, a treble contains three, and a fourfold contains four. Larger folds follow the same pattern. “Fold” describes the number of selections in one constituent combination; it does not necessarily describe the complete ticket.
How five selections generate ten threefolds
This example supplies five fictional selections—Aster, Birch, Cedar, Delta and Elm—and asks the calculation engine for every threefold. The result is 10 separate lines. This is often described mathematically as “5 choose 3”, but the displayed membership and count below come from the engine rather than a second combination implementation.
- Line 1Aster + Birch + Cedar
- Line 2Aster + Birch + Delta
- Line 3Aster + Birch + Elm
- Line 4Aster + Cedar + Delta
- Line 5Aster + Cedar + Elm
- Line 6Aster + Delta + Elm
- Line 7Birch + Cedar + Delta
- Line 8Birch + Cedar + Elm
- Line 9Birch + Delta + Elm
- Line 10Cedar + Delta + Elm
Every selection appears in several lines, but no line contains all five selections: each is exactly one treble.
Standard bet types and custom permutations
Standard bet types use predefined fold structures. A custom permutation instead lets the user select the fold sizes directly.
| Product | Selections | Singles | Fold structure | Total bets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trixie | 3 | No singles | 3 doubles, 1 treble | 4 |
| Patent | 3 | 3 singles | 3 doubles, 1 treble | 7 |
| Yankee | 4 | No singles | 6 doubles, 4 trebles, 1 4-fold | 11 |
| Lucky 15 | 4 | 4 singles | 6 doubles, 4 trebles, 1 4-fold | 15 |

Stake per line
Stake per line
10 lines × £0.50
= £5.00 total stake
Stake per line applies the same monetary amount independently to every constituent bet.
This distinction matters: entering £0.50 per line does not mean the complete ticket costs £0.50.
Total ticket stake
Total ticket stake
£1.03 across 10 lines
3 lines receive £0.11
- 7 lines receive £0.10
Total-ticket mode starts with one complete outlay and allocates it deterministically.
The engine allocates £1.03 across the ten lines as follows:
| Lines | Allocated stake per line |
|---|---|
| 1–3 | £0.11 |
| 4–10 | £0.10 |
The first 3 canonical lines receive £0.11 each; the remaining 7 receive £0.10. Every allocation remains visible, and the exact total remains £1.03. No floating-point division or manual remainder rule is used in this guide.
How outcomes affect a permutation
- Lose
- A losing selection makes every line containing it lose under ordinary straight settlement; unaffected lines can still win.
- Void
- A void selection contributes the neutral void multiplier only on lines containing it.
- Partial
- A partial outcome can alter the multipliers of affected lines.
- Supplied adjustment
- Supplied Rule 4 and dead-heat adjustments remain attached to the relevant selections and lines.
SlipLogic uses neutral supplied rules. It does not infer bookmaker eligibility, withdrawals, promotional concessions or bonus terms. Use the general calculator to inspect a supplied result rather than treating this guide as a second settlement interface.
Why inspect every line?
- Winning and losing lines may coexist in the same ticket.
- Voids change only lines containing the void selection.
- Partial outcomes can change an affected line’s multiplier.
- Total-ticket allocations may differ by one minor unit.
- An aggregate return hides which combination produced each amount.
Line-by-line inspection keeps the source selections, exact allocation, price, settlement effect and return connected.
Common mistakes
- Confusing total ticket stake with stake per line.
- Assuming every selection appears in every generated line.
- Treating a void selection as a losing selection.
- Multiplying rounded display values instead of authoritative exact values.
- Expecting bookmaker promotions or bonuses to be added automatically.
Permutation bet FAQ
How many bets are in a permutation?
It depends on the number of selections and requested fold sizes. The engine materialises each valid constituent combination; this five-selection threefold example contains ten.
What is the difference between selections and lines?
Selections are the supplied events or runners. Lines are the separate bets formed from subsets of those selections.
How do I calculate the total permutation stake?
With stake per line, apply the amount to every line. With total-ticket stake, allocate one exact total across all lines. SlipLogic exposes the resulting allocation in either mode.
What happens when one selection loses?
Every line containing that selection loses under ordinary straight settlement. Lines that exclude it retain their own supplied outcomes.
Are named bets such as Yankee and Patent permutations?
Yes. They are standard bet types with predefined selection counts and fold structures. A custom permutation lets you choose supported folds directly.
