How a dead heat changes a return
The odds stay the same
A dead heat changes the share of your stake treated as winning. It does not change the quoted odds.
The stake is split
In a two-way win dead heat, half the stake normally wins at the quoted odds and the other half is lost.
Place ties can retain more
When several paying positions remain, more than one share of the stake may be retained. Bookmaker and event rules determine the available places.
Worked example
A stake of 10 at 5/1 in a two-way dead heat settles 5 as winning and 5 as lost, producing a return of 30.
